On the evening of Monday Dec. 21st, we met the Swanson's and Hansen's at a very cool "program" put on by one of the Baptist churches here. It was called Bethlehem Revisited. They recreated the town of Bethlehem in real life. They created a street and on each side built a bunch of shops where they "sold" goods from that time period. They had actual animals (chickens, geese, rabbits) in some of the shops and had larger animals (sheep, goats, donkeys) on lead ropes for people to pet. All the people were dressed in the clothing used during Christ's time. At the end of the little "street" was the stable where they had a live Nativity, with Luke 2 being narrated. They gave each male head of house hold tokens to pay taxes on. We had to sign in as if we were registering to pay taxes, and when asked if our child was a boy and his age, we were told to lie and say he was at least three so Herod wouldn't kill him. The people even tried to speak in the same manner you would think people of that time period would speak.
It was so very interesting. I was very impressed with how everything was put together and the "feel" of the little "town". I know the Swanson's and Hansen's loved being able to explain to some of their children what was going on and the story of Christ's birth. I hope this church continues to do this every year, so we can take The Bug back. I would love to have this opportunity to teach him in such a very real way, what it may have been like when Christ was born.
